Keep Spreading Groundcovers Off Walkways

Plants

Why Walkway Clearance Matters

Groundcovers soften bed edges and reduce exposed soil, but vigorous growth can creep across pavers, sidewalks, steps, drains, and driveway borders. Wet foliage becomes slippery. Hidden paver edges create trip points. Dense runners also trap leaf litter and moisture against hard surfaces. In South Tampa’s long growing season, a narrow strip can spread faster than expected after summer rain. Routine edge control keeps the landscape attractive and the walking route easy to use.

Plan for Mature Spread

Choose a groundcover based on its mature height, rooting habit, sun exposure, and growth rate. Asiatic jasmine forms a dense mat and needs regular edging. Perennial peanut stays lower but still sends runners. Native options vary widely. Set the original planting line back from the pavement rather than planting directly against it. Leave enough room for growth between maintenance visits, especially near steps, pool decks, gates, and wheelchair routes.

Create a Clear Maintenance Line

Use the hardscape edge as a consistent visual boundary. Lift runners from the pavement before cutting so you can see where stems originate. Trim the planting slightly inside the edge instead of flush with every paver. This creates a small buffer and reduces immediate regrowth across the path. Keep the line smooth around curves. Remove cuttings from joints and drains so they do not root, stain the surface, or block water movement.

Use the Right Cutting Method

Hand pruners provide control near irrigation, lighting cable, tree roots, and delicate pavers. A string trimmer works faster on broad, established borders when the operator holds a steady angle and avoids scalping. Hedge shears help level taller mats, but repeated flat shearing can create a thick layer of dead stems below the foliage. Alternate light surface trimming with selective thinning so air and light reach the lower growth.

Manage Water, Mulch, and Edging

Redirect sprinkler heads that constantly wet the walkway or push growth toward it. Keep mulch below the top of pavers and sweep loose material back into the bed. Physical edging helps in some locations, but it must sit firmly and follow drainage needs. Groundcover runners often cross low edging, so edging does not replace maintenance. Check nearby drains after trimming and keep water moving away from doors, steps, and low sections.

Avoid Common Mistakes

Do not spray herbicide along every walkway edge unless the product, plant, and site make it appropriate. Drift can damage desirable plants and leave an uneven brown band. Do not scalp the entire groundcover to solve one overgrown edge. Avoid cutting hidden irrigation tubing or landscape-light cable. Most important, do not wait until the path narrows. Small monthly corrections take less labor and create a cleaner result than major seasonal cutbacks.

Keep the Route Safe and Finished

Walk the property from the street to every entrance after maintenance. Look down at step edges, gate swings, utility covers, and places where visitors change direction. Ecoscape Outdoor Services maintains detailed bed lines and groundcover borders for South Tampa properties. We balance plant health with safe access, clean hardscape, working drainage, and a polished appearance. Regular attention keeps spreading plants in their intended role without letting them take over the route.
