Tampa’s Fertilizer Season Reopens October 1

Know the Local Date
Inside the City of Tampa, lawn and landscape fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorus is prohibited from June 1 through September 30. Applications resume October 1. The restricted period protects local waterways during the months when intense rainfall creates the greatest runoff risk. Property owners should confirm the rule applying to their exact address before scheduling work.
Do Not Rush the Application
October 1 marks the end of the seasonal restriction, but it does not mean every lawn needs immediate fertilizer. Inspect turf condition, soil moisture, recent rainfall, and the weather forecast first. Fertilizer applied before heavy rain can wash away from the root zone. A stressed, diseased, flooded, or poorly irrigated lawn needs diagnosis before nutrients are added.
Use the Right Product and Rate
Choose a product labeled for the turf species and follow its application rate. More fertilizer does not produce a healthier lawn. Excess growth increases mowing demand and can weaken turf when conditions change. Keep granules off sidewalks, driveways, streets, drains, and water. Sweep misplaced material back into the lawn rather than washing it into the stormwater system.
Water With Control
Follow the product label for watering instructions. If irrigation is required, use enough water to move nutrients into the root zone without causing runoff. Check sprinkler alignment before application. A broken head or misdirected nozzle can move fertilizer onto pavement or concentrate water in one area. Rain sensors and seasonal controller adjustments help prevent unnecessary irrigation after storms.
Licensing and Safety
Florida regulates commercial fertilizer application. Hire a properly trained and licensed provider for professional treatment. Keep people and pets away as directed by the product label. Store unused material securely and dry. Never mix products or apply them from an unmarked container. The label provides the legal directions for application, protective equipment, timing, and cleanup.
