Autumn Fern

Dryopteris erythrosora

Autumn fern with coppery new fronds and mature green foliage in a shaded garden

Overview

Autumn Fern is an evergreen to semi-evergreen woodland fern admired for new fronds that emerge copper, bronze, and salmon before maturing to glossy green.

Mature Size and Habit

The plant forms an arching clump roughly 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it beneath trees, along shaded borders, beside covered entries, in woodland masses, or in containers protected from afternoon sun.

Sunlight

Bright shade or filtered morning light is best. Direct midday and western sun can scorch fronds, particularly when soil is dry. Deep shade is tolerated but may reduce vigor and the intensity of new-frond color.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Provide acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter and kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulch helps cool the shallow crown and conserve moisture. Irrigate during dry periods while keeping water from standing around the roots.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through spring allows easy establishment in cool, moist conditions.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove old or weathered fronds at the base in late winter before new growth unfurls. Avoid cutting the central crown. Renew organic mulch, divide congested clumps only when necessary, and protect tender emerging fronds from mechanical damage.

Wildlife Value

Ferns do not produce nectar or fruit, but their layered foliage supplies cool cover for small garden animals and beneficial invertebrates.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants handle typical Central Florida winters, though a freeze may brown exposed fronds. Shade, mulch, and consistent moisture are important during high summer heat; scorched foliage usually indicates excess sun or drought stress.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major landscape hazard is widely recognized, but ornamental plants should not be eaten without expert identification. Roots are compact and nonaggressive. Keep the crown above heavy mulch and away from downspout basins that remain saturated.

Invasive Concerns

Autumn Fern is not generally considered invasive in Florida landscapes.
