Carissa Holly

Ilex cornuta 'Carissa'

Overview

Carissa Holly is a compact evergreen Chinese holly cultivar valued for dense glossy foliage, a naturally mounded habit, and durable landscape performance.

Mature Size and Habit

It grows slowly into a broad, tidy mound with closely spaced branches and leaves that usually carry one sharp point at the tip. Plan for an established size of about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for low foundations, formal or informal hedges, parking-lot islands, mass plantings, entry beds, or durable evergreen structure.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun is suitable, with the densest growth in brighter sites and useful afternoon relief near intensely reflective surfaces.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment; mature plants tolerate drought better than saturated roots or constantly wet mulch.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Install from fall through early spring for low-stress rooting, though container plants can be planted year-round with careful irrigation.

Pruning and Maintenance

Use selective pruning to retain the mound and reduce repeated shearing; inspect for scale insects and remove dead or crowded interior twigs as needed.

Wildlife Value

Dense branching can provide shelter for small birds, and occasional fruit may be used by wildlife, although this cultivar often fruits lightly.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It tolerates Central Florida heat and brief cold well once established, but drought during establishment can thin foliage or scorch leaf margins.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Leaves have sharp terminal spines and fruit is not intended for people or pets; keep the shrub back from narrow walks, play zones, and service access.

Invasive Concerns

This nonnative cultivar is not listed as invasive in Florida, but volunteer seedlings should be removed if fruiting occurs near natural areas.

For identification, care, and Florida landscape context, review NC State Extension's Carissa Holly profile. Site conditions vary, so use local soil, drainage, and exposure observations to refine care.
