Darrow's Blueberry
Vaccinium darrowii
Darrow's blueberry shrub with small evergreen leaves and blue fruit in a native Florida garden

Overview
Darrow's Blueberry is a compact evergreen Florida-native shrub with fine blue-green foliage, small urn-shaped spring flowers, and blue fruit.
Mature Size and Habit
Plants usually form a twiggy rounded shrub about 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, sometimes staying lower in lean soil.
Best Landscape Uses
Place it in native gardens, pollinator borders, wildlife plantings, low informal hedges, sandy foundation beds, or containers filled with acidic media.
Sunlight
Full sun to partial sun is appropriate. Strong light supports compact growth, flowering, and fruiting, while light afternoon shade may reduce stress in exposed urban sites.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Acidic, well-drained sand or sandy organic soil is essential. Avoid limestone, alkaline irrigation deposits, and heavy wet fill. Water consistently through establishment, then allow slight drying between deep irrigations while preventing prolonged drought.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from fall through early spring so roots develop before hot weather.
Pruning and Maintenance
Little pruning is required. Remove dead twigs and lightly tip-prune after fruiting if denser branching is desired. Maintain acidic mulch such as pine bark and avoid routine high-phosphorus fertilizer or products that raise soil pH.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support native bees and other pollinators, while berries are eaten by birds and other wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
The species is well adapted to Florida heat and ordinary Central Florida cold. Root stress is more often caused by alkaline soil, poor drainage, or abrupt drying than by temperature.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Roots are fine and nonaggressive. Only consume fruit when the plant is positively identified and has not been treated with non-food-use chemicals. Site away from alkaline concrete runoff and high-traffic areas where brittle twigs may be broken.
Invasive Concerns
Darrow's Blueberry is native to Florida and is not invasive.
