Overview
Encore Bravo Azalea (Rhododendron hybrid 'Conlen' (Autumn Bravo)) is a non-native shrub suited to Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect about 4 to 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, forming a dense, rounded evergreen mound with glossy leaves and repeat flushes of vivid red flowers. Growth is moderate.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it where the repeat bloom can be seen from an entry, patio, or street. Give each plant enough width so repeated shearing does not turn the planting into a thin outer shell.
Sunlight
Morning sun with afternoon protection is the safest placement in Tampa. Encore types tolerate more sun than many traditional azaleas, but intense reflected heat can bleach foliage and dry the root zone.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Azaleas need acidic, organic, sharply drained soil. Tampa beds influenced by limestone, shell, concrete, or alkaline irrigation water often develop iron chlorosis, so test soil before installation and avoid burying the shallow root ball.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
October through early spring offers easy establishment. Summer planting requires reliable drainage and frequent root-ball checks.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after the main spring flush and avoid late heavy cuts that remove developing buds. Watch for lace bugs, spider mites, root rot, and nutrient chlorosis; keep mulch off the crown.
Wildlife Value
The open flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies. Wildlife activity improves when broad-spectrum insecticides are avoided during bloom and nearby beds include additional seasonal nectar sources.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat is tolerated when roots stay cool and evenly moist. Drought, alkaline soil, and hot west-facing walls cause more stress than ordinary Tampa winter cold, though a hard freeze can burn new growth.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
All rhododendron and azalea parts contain compounds that are toxic if eaten. Keep plants and clippings away from pets, livestock, and small children, and wear gloves if sensitive skin reacts to plant sap.
Invasive Concerns
This named ornamental hybrid is not a Florida native and is not treated as an invasive landscape plant. Remove unwanted seedlings or suckers and never discard live plant material in natural areas.
