Encore Embers Azalea

Rhododendron 'Conleb'

Encore Embers azalea with vivid red-orange blooms in a mulched Tampa garden

Overview

Encore Embers Azalea is a compact evergreen azalea selected for vivid red-orange flowers and dependable repeat bloom.

Mature Size and Habit

Expect a rounded, densely branched shrub about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a foundation accent, low flowering hedge, grouped mass, or large-container specimen.

Sunlight

Provide morning sun with afternoon shade or bright filtered light. Four to six hours of direct sun promotes bloom, but protection during Tampa's hottest late-day hours helps prevent leaf scorch and moisture stress.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in acidic, organic, well-drained soil with the root flare slightly above grade. Keep the root zone evenly moist during establishment, then water deeply when the upper soil begins to dry. Avoid lime, standing water, and burying the shallow roots beneath heavy mulch.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring offers the gentlest establishment weather.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly just after the main spring flush so developing later buds are not removed. Remove damaged twigs, replenish pine-bark mulch, and use an acid-forming fertilizer only when soil or foliage indicates a need.

Wildlife Value

The flowers can provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants tolerate Central Florida winters, although a hard freeze may injure open flowers or tender growth. Afternoon shade, mulch, and steady root moisture reduce heat stress during prolonged hot, dry periods.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All azalea parts are toxic if eaten by people or pets. The fine roots are shallow and nonaggressive, but they resent compaction, trenching, and mower damage. Keep the shrub away from play areas where ingestion is a concern.

Invasive Concerns

This cultivated azalea is not regarded as invasive in Florida landscapes.
