Encore Empress Azalea

Rhododendron 'Roblezd'

Encore Empress azalea covered in medium pink semi-double flowers in a Florida landscape

Overview

Encore Empress Azalea is an evergreen reblooming selection with medium-pink, semi-double flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

This upright-rounded shrub matures near 4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Plant it along foundations, in low hedges, as a specimen, in repeated masses, or in a substantial container.

Sunlight

Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal in Central Florida. About four to six hours of direct light supports flower production; intense western exposure can bleach blooms and increase irrigation demand.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use acidic, humus-rich soil that drains freely but holds moderate moisture. Set the root ball slightly high, mulch with pine bark without covering the crown, and irrigate the shallow root system consistently during establishment. Do not plant in alkaline fill or a wet basin.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Install from fall through early spring for cooler rooting weather and lower water stress.

Pruning and Maintenance

Shape only as needed after the primary spring bloom. Late pruning removes developing flower buds. Remove dead growth, maintain a two- to three-inch mulch layer, and apply acid-forming fertilizer conservatively according to a soil test or plant response.

Wildlife Value

Pink flowers offer nectar to bees, butterflies, and other visiting pollinators.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The shrub is suitable for Central Florida, but open blooms and new shoots can be damaged by an unusual freeze. Mulch, afternoon shade, and even soil moisture help protect the roots and foliage during extreme heat.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Azalea foliage and flowers are toxic if consumed by people, dogs, cats, or livestock. Roots are fine, shallow, and noninvasive, yet easily harmed by digging and compaction. Keep pets from chewing the plant.

Invasive Concerns

Encore Empress is not considered invasive in Florida.
