Fashion Azalea

Rhododendron hybrid 'Fashion'

Fashion Azalea with salmon-pink flowers above fine-textured evergreen leaves and green foliage in a mulched garden bed

Overview

Fashion Azalea brings salmon-pink flowers above fine-textured evergreen leaves to evergreen beds. Its strongest seasonal display is in spring, with occasional later flowers. It is not Florida native.

Mature Size and Habit

Plan for 3–5 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide. Its dense and rounded habit needs room to develop without frequent shearing.

Best Landscape Uses

Use in layered borders, foundation beds, or grouped accents. Allow its full spread beside paths and windows. Use acidic container mix where soil is alkaline.

Sunlight

Provide partial sun or filtered light. Morning sun and afternoon shade reduce stress from hot pavement and exposed west-facing walls. Deep shade reduces flowering.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use acidic, well-drained soil and test pH before planting. Keep the root crown above settled grade. Water the root ball during establishment, then deeply during dry periods. Avoid soggy soil and mulch against stems.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring reduces heat stress during rooting. Year-round installation requires dependable establishment watering. Delay planting during a freeze, severe drought, or saturated conditions.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly after spring flowering. Remove dead or crossing stems instead of clipping into tight cubes. Monitor lace bugs and yellow foliage. Diagnose drainage and soil pH before adding fertilizer.

Wildlife Value

Flowers attract visiting pollinators, while branching provides small-scale shelter. Include native host plants elsewhere for wider wildlife support.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The listed hardiness range is USDA zones 7–10a. Cold injury is less limiting than hot, dry roots in Tampa. Protect new plants from extreme exposure and avoid saline irrigation.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Azaleas contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if eaten by people or pets. Keep clippings away from animals. They lack prominent thorns. Shallow roots need protection from digging and repeated foot traffic.

Invasive Concerns

UF/IFAS describes Fashion Azalea as not known to be invasive. It remains a nonnative ornamental. Keep it in managed beds and remove unwanted seedlings.
