Fireworks Goldenrod

Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks'

Fireworks goldenrod with arching sprays of bright yellow flowers in a pollinator garden

Overview

Fireworks Goldenrod is a well-behaved selection of rough goldenrod, Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks'.

Mature Size and Habit

This herbaceous perennial typically grows 3 to 4 feet tall and about 2 to 3 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in pollinator gardens, sunny borders, native beds, rain-garden margins, meadow-style masses, or wildlife plantings.

Sunlight

Full sun gives the strongest stems and heaviest bloom. Partial sun is acceptable, but too much shade can produce leaning growth and fewer flowers. Morning sun with good airflow is useful in humid Tampa sites.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in moist, well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged drought, but avoid soggy conditions. A light mulch conserves moisture without burying the perennial crown.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is ideal for root establishment.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pinch or cut stems back once in late spring if a shorter, bushier plant is desired, then stop pruning so flower buds can form. Cut spent stems to the base in winter and divide crowded clumps every few years.

Wildlife Value

Late-season flowers are rich resources for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators when fewer plants are blooming.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The perennial tolerates Central Florida heat when moisture and airflow are adequate. Frost can end the seasonal top growth, but established roots normally persist. Excess humidity combined with crowding may encourage foliar disease.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major thorn or root hazard is associated with the plant. Pollen is heavy and insect-carried; windborne allergy symptoms are more often caused by ragweed blooming at the same time. Do not ingest ornamental plants without expert guidance.

Invasive Concerns

The species occurs naturally in Florida, and the 'Fireworks' cultivar is less aggressive than many spreading goldenrods.
