Golden Trumpet Tree
Handroanthus chrysotrichus
Mature Golden Trumpet Tree covered in bright yellow blooms in a Central Florida landscape

Overview
Golden Trumpet Tree is a dramatic small-to-medium tree prized for dense clusters of bright yellow trumpet blooms. It is often briefly deciduous before its main spring display.
Mature Size and Habit
Expect a rounded canopy about 25–35 feet tall and wide in a protected site. Palmately compound leaves are silvery green above and softly tan-hairy beneath.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a specimen, patio accent, lawn tree, or flowering centerpiece. Keep it away from narrow side yards, overhead wires, roofs, and cramped foundation beds.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the strongest structure and heaviest bloom. At least six hours of direct light is preferred; excessive shade reduces flowers and loosens the canopy.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained soil and water deeply during establishment. Once rooted, it handles short dry periods, but saturated soil can weaken roots. Keep mulch off the trunk.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Install from fall through early spring so roots expand before summer heat. Year-round planting is possible with reliable irrigation, but avoid drought and cold events.
Pruning and Maintenance
Train one trunk and well-spaced scaffold branches while young. Remove crossing or damaged wood after flowering, avoid topping, and expect brief seasonal leaf and flower drop.
Wildlife Value
Nectar-rich flowers support bees and other pollinators, although the pods are not a major wildlife food. The canopy offers limited perching and shelter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat and humidity suit this tropical tree, but frost can injure foliage and young stems. In colder Tampa pockets, shelter it from north winds and delay freeze pruning.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
It has no prominent thorns and is not commonly flagged for major landscape toxicity, but flowers and pods are not food. Allow root space and keep the spreading canopy away from structures.
Invasive Concerns
This South American species is not considered a problem plant by the current UF/IFAS assessment and may be recommended in Central Florida. Remove unwanted seedlings.
