Overview

Horizontal Cocoplum (Chrysobalanus icaco 'Horizontal') is a Florida-native shrub suited to Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Expect about 18 to 24 inches tall with a spreading habit that can reach 4 to 8 feet when stems travel laterally. Growth is moderate.

Best Landscape Uses

Use this cultivar as a low coastal ground cover, bank stabilizer, broad foundation mass, or foreground layer where views must remain open. Trim only the shoots that turn upright to preserve its horizontal form.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the densest, lowest growth and best leaf color. Partial sun is tolerated, but deep shade creates open stems and a weaker ground-cover effect.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Cocoplum adapts to sandy Florida soils and tolerates salt, periodic dryness, and brief wet periods after establishment. Water consistently during the first year, then reduce irrigation while avoiding permanently saturated root zones.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

October through early spring offers easy establishment. Summer planting requires reliable drainage and frequent root-ball checks.

Pruning and Maintenance

Maintenance is limited to removing upright shoots, correcting bed-edge spread, and thinning dead or crossing stems. Scale insects, sooty mold, and nutrient stress may appear, especially where airflow is poor or soil is strongly alkaline.

Wildlife Value

Small flowers support pollinators, dense foliage provides cover, and the fruit feeds birds and other wildlife. Fruit production depends on plant sex and local pollination, so an individual plant may not carry a heavy crop.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants handle Tampa heat, coastal exposure, and short dry periods well. Young plants are more vulnerable to hard freezes, so protected placement and spring-to-summer establishment help in colder inland pockets.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The plant has no major thorn or aggressive-root concern. Its wide stems can extend across walks or edging if ignored, and fallen fruit may stain hard surfaces, so provide setbacks near narrow paths and pale paving.

Invasive Concerns

Cocoplum is native to southern Florida, including coastal habitats. Keep cultivated plants within designed beds, protect nearby native vegetation during installation, and avoid altering natural shorelines without required approvals.
