Japanese Fatsia

Fatsia japonica

Japanese Fatsia showing identifying foliage and natural growth habit

Overview

Japanese Fatsia is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree with large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves. Its tropical form suits shaded Tampa courtyards and protected gardens.

Mature Size and Habit

Fatsia japonica commonly reaches 8 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Its upright, multi-stemmed habit creates a lush architectural accent.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a shaded accent, foundation layer, courtyard specimen, privacy mass, or large container plant. Ferns make effective textural companions.

Sunlight

Provide partial sun to full shade. Morning sun is usually suitable, but hot afternoon sun, reflected heat, and drying wind can scorch the broad leaves.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Water during establishment and dry spells, then let the surface begin to dry. Soggy soil encourages root rot.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from fall through early spring in Tampa and Central Florida. Warm-weather installation needs even moisture and mulch kept clear of the crown.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove damaged or crowded stems at their base and shorten lanky growth after bloom. Keep mulch off stems and inspect stressed plants for scale or mites.

Wildlife Value

Rounded white fall flower clusters attract pollinating insects, followed by dark fruit. Pair Fatsia with native flowering and fruiting plants for richer habitat.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

This species handles Tampa heat best in shade with adequate moisture. Full sun scorches leaves, wind tears them, and brief freezes can damage the foliage.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No thorn or aggressive-root concern is expected. Allow clearance from walks, avoid sap contact on sensitive skin, and keep chewed plant material away from pets and children.

Invasive Concerns

Japanese Fatsia is not a Florida native and is not generally treated as invasive locally. Remove unwanted seedlings and never dump prunings near natural areas.
