Leopard Plant

Farfugium japonicum

Leopard Plant showing identifying foliage and natural growth habit

Overview

Leopard Plant is a clumping evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial with large, glossy leaves and yellow daisy-like flowers. It gives shaded Tampa beds bold tropical texture.

Mature Size and Habit

Farfugium japonicum grows about 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, expanding slowly by short rhizomes. Flower stalks rise above the foliage.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in shaded borders, beneath high tree canopies, beside protected entries, at rain-garden margins, or in large containers. Repeated clumps form a bold ground layer.

Sunlight

Give partial shade to full shade. Morning light supports growth and flowering, but hot afternoon sun can scorch leaves. Strong wind may tear the broad foliage.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Provide fertile soil that stays evenly moist yet drains well. Irrigate before the root zone dries completely. Standing water and buried crowns invite decline.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is ideal in Tampa and Central Florida. Summer planting needs steady irrigation and shade protection. Keep mulch clear of the crown.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut spent flower stalks and damaged leaves at the base. Divide crowded clumps in cool weather, check for slugs or snails, and fertilize modestly.

Wildlife Value

Yellow flowers feed pollinating insects from late summer into fall. Dense foliage adds small-scale cover, though the plant is not a major wildlife food source.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Leopard Plant handles humid Florida summers when shaded and watered. Excess sun burns leaves, and frost can damage top growth, though protected clumps often recover.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

It has no thorns and compact rhizomes are not considered pavement-damaging. Keep it outside heavy foot traffic, and prevent children or pets from chewing plant material.

Invasive Concerns

Farfugium japonicum is not native to Florida and is not generally listed as invasive locally. Divide or edge expanding clumps if they exceed the planned bed.
