Little Henry Virginia Sweetspire

Itea virginica 'Sprich'

Little Henry Virginia sweetspire with arching white flower clusters and green foliage

Overview

Little Henry Virginia Sweetspire is a compact selection of the Florida-native Itea virginica.

Mature Size and Habit

This low, mounded shrub generally reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in low hedges, rain gardens, native borders, pollinator beds, foundation plantings, or massed beneath open-canopy trees.

Sunlight

Full sun to partial sun is suitable. Morning sun with some afternoon protection is dependable in Tampa; brighter light encourages flowering and denser growth when soil moisture is adequate.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Sweetspire adapts to moist acidic soil, seasonal wetness, and average well-drained beds. Water regularly during establishment, then deeply during prolonged drought. Mulch the root zone while leaving stems and crown uncovered.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the easiest planting window.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune immediately after flowering if shaping is needed because blooms form on older wood. Remove damaged stems at ground level, thin crowded growth rather than shearing, and clip unwanted suckers where a contained clump is preferred.

Wildlife Value

Fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Virginia sweetspire tolerates Central Florida winters and summer humidity. Fall color is more pronounced after cool weather. Newly planted shrubs can wilt in intense heat if roots are dry, so maintain mulch and even moisture.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major toxicity or thorn hazard is commonly associated with this shrub. Roots are not structurally aggressive, but suckering stems can widen the planting over time. Allow room to spread and keep growth clear of drains and edging.

Invasive Concerns

This is a cultivar of a Florida-native species and is not considered invasive.
