Pinkball Dombeya

Dombeya wallichii

Pinkball dombeya with large hanging clusters of soft pink flowers

Overview

Pinkball dombeya, Dombeya wallichii, is a broad tropical shrub or small tree whose winter display consists of large, hanging balls of fragrant pink flowers.

Mature Size and Habit

Plants can approach 20 feet tall and equally wide, developing a low-branched, spreading crown and large textured leaves.

Best Landscape Uses

Use as a stand-alone lawn specimen, flowering backdrop, or feature in a spacious tropical garden.

Sunlight

Full sun produces the strongest framework and heaviest flowering, though light partial sun is tolerated.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

It accepts varied soils if drainage is adequate. Water regularly through establishment, then irrigate during prolonged drought.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant in spring after serious cold risk so a strong root system develops before the following winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Train a sound framework early and remove weak, crossing, or storm-damaged limbs. Prune after flowering rather than before the winter show.

Wildlife Value

The abundant flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects when fewer tropical ornamentals are blooming.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat and humidity are well tolerated. Cold is the primary limitation: frost can burn foliage and a hard freeze can damage branches.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No prominent thorn hazard is associated with the species, but falling flowers and leaves can be slippery.

Invasive Concerns

This Madagascan species is nonnative, and UF/IFAS notes that its invasive potential has not been fully assessed.
