Overview

Plum Delight Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Plum Delight') is a non-native shrub suited to Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

Expect about 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, with arching evergreen branches, rose-purple new leaves that mature bronze-purple, and dark pink fringe flowers. Growth is moderate.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a broad foundation shrub, informal hedge, colorful screen, specimen, or dark-foliage contrast. Give it adequate width because forcing this cultivar under a low window creates constant pruning and weak form.

Sunlight

Full sun supports the deepest foliage color and strongest flowering. Partial sun is tolerated, but heavy shade turns leaves greener and opens the canopy.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in acidic, well-drained soil and avoid chronically wet beds. Tampa limestone fill and alkaline irrigation water can create nutrient deficiency, while a slightly raised root ball improves oxygen around roots during rainy periods.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

October through early spring offers easy establishment. Summer planting requires reliable drainage and frequent root-ball checks.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune selectively after the spring display and allow the graceful branching habit to remain visible. Watch for scale, mites, leaf spots, nutrient chlorosis, and root decline where drainage or soil pH is unsuitable.

Wildlife Value

Fringe flowers provide seasonal pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. Pair it with native shrubs and perennials that flower at other times to maintain consistent resources across the year.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Plum Delight performs in Florida zones 8 through 10a and is well matched to Tampa when drainage is reliable. Protect newly planted roots from drought and wait for live buds before removing any freeze-damaged tips.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Loropetalum has no major thorn or aggressive-root concern. Keep its mature canopy back from walks, meters, condensers, and foundations so routine pruning does not become excessive.

Invasive Concerns

This non-native cultivar is not generally treated as an invasive Florida landscape plant. Maintain it within the designed bed, remove unexpected seedlings, and do not dump trimmings into natural areas.
