Rojo Congo Philodendron
Philodendron 'Rojo Congo'
Rojo Congo Philodendron showing its characteristic foliage in a protected container display

Overview
Rojo Congo is a self-heading philodendron with broad, thick, dark green leaves and purple-brown petioles. Coppery new growth adds contrast to its bold evergreen crown.
Mature Size and Habit
It grows upright and outward without climbing support. The original cultivar record measured a mature container plant at about 2.5 feet tall and 3.7 feet wide. Leave extra clearance for the broad leaves.
Best Landscape Uses
Use a large patio container or a protected tropical accent bed. Give the crown space beside entries and paths rather than squeezing it into a narrow border.
Sunlight
Bright filtered light supports good growth. Gradually acclimate nursery foliage to gentle morning sun, and protect it from harsh afternoon exposure.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Choose loose, organic-rich soil with prompt drainage. Water thoroughly, then let the upper mix begin drying. Keep the crown clear of deep mulch and standing water.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring through early summer is a practical establishment window in Tampa. Containers simplify winter relocation in colder parts of Central Florida.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove declining leaves close to the stem and keep tools clean. Inspect leaf undersides for pests. Rotate container plants for balanced growth and repot when crowded.
Wildlife Value
This cultivar is grown for foliage, not a dependable flowering display. Add appropriate native nectar and host plants if wildlife support is a priority.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Protect tropical growth from frost and cold drafts. A sheltered position reduces exposure, but it does not replace protection during a freeze.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Philodendron sap and calcium oxalate crystals cause irritation. Keep it away from children and chewing pets, wear gloves for pruning, and leave walking clearance around leaves.
Invasive Concerns
Rojo Congo is a cultivated hybrid rather than a Florida-native species. Keep divisions contained and dispose of trimmings responsibly outside natural areas.
