Rope Hoya
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta'
Rope Hoya showing its characteristic foliage in a protected container display

Overview
Rope hoya is the plain-green Compacta selection of Hoya carnosa. Tightly puckered, fleshy leaves crowd its pendant stems, and mature plants produce fragrant waxy flowers.
Mature Size and Habit
Allow about 1.5–3 feet of trailing length and roughly 0.3–1.5 feet of spread. Slow growth forms thick hanging strands. Photos show established plants, not supplied pot sizes.
Best Landscape Uses
Choose a hanging basket or elevated patio container where stems hang freely. The nursery's listed 8-inch format is a hanging basket. Keep displays accessible for inspection.
Sunlight
Give bright indirect light and protection from hot afternoon sun. Gentle morning light suits an acclimated plant. Very dim positions reduce flowering.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Use an airy, fast-draining mix with organic matter. Let the surface dry between waterings, avoid prolonged drought, and never leave roots sitting in water.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring is a practical repotting season in Tampa. Start outdoor displays after cold fronts ease, with shelter from heavy rain and reliable drainage.
Pruning and Maintenance
Inspect curled leaves carefully for mealybugs. Trim only as needed and preserve old flowering spurs. Repot when necessary rather than moving plants into oversized pots.
Wildlife Value
Flowers provide fragrance, but this Asian ornamental is not a substitute for native wildlife plants. Do not assume it supports Florida butterfly larvae.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Warmth and humidity suit it with good airflow. Move containers indoors before nights fall below 50°F, and protect foliage from frost.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
There are no thorns or woody structural roots. Secure basket hooks and keep hanging stems clear of walkways. Ornamental foliage and flowers are not intended as food.
Invasive Concerns
This cultivated selection is not native to Florida. Keep stems and cuttings contained, and discard plant material responsibly rather than into natural areas.
