Spanish Stopper

Eugenia foetida

Spanish Stopper (Eugenia foetida), a Florida native plant installed in a Tampa landscape

Overview

A dense Florida-native evergreen shrub or small tree with fine foliage, fragrant white flowers, and dark berries that performs especially well in coastal hammock landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

It usually reaches 10 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide, depending on pruning and exposure. The naturally dense branching responds well to shaping.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for hedges, privacy screens, foundation planting, wildlife gardens, and shaded native borders. It is refined enough for formal or naturalistic designs.

Sunlight

Full sun through partial shade is suitable, and established plants also accept bright filtered shade. Flowering is strongest with several hours of direct light.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

It adapts to sandy, alkaline, or limestone soil as long as drainage is good. Provide moderate water during establishment, then reduce frequency.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Spring through early fall supports quick establishment, while mild Tampa winters also work with careful watering. Mulch the broad root zone without touching stems.

Pruning and Maintenance

Light selective pruning after flowering maintains density and size. Avoid repeatedly cutting into bare old wood or forcing the plant into an unnaturally narrow shape.

Wildlife Value

Fragrant flowers support bees and other pollinators, berries feed birds, and the evergreen canopy supplies nesting and shelter.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat, humidity, salt wind, and coastal exposure are well tolerated. Severe freezes can damage tender growth, so the warmest local microclimates are best.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The root system is normally compatible with residential beds when adequate room is provided. Fallen berries create minor seasonal litter on hard surfaces.

Invasive Concerns

Spanish stopper is native to southern Florida and is not considered invasive. Bird-distributed seedlings remain manageable in maintained beds.
