White Cloud Muhly Grass

Muhlenbergia capillaris 'White Cloud'

White Cloud muhly grass with airy white flower plumes in a sunny Tampa landscape

Overview

White Cloud Muhly Grass is a white-flowering selection of Florida-native pink muhly grass.

Mature Size and Habit

The foliage forms a rounded clump about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide; flowering stems can bring the overall display close to 4 feet.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a sunny accent, in mass plantings, along borders, in native gardens, or among low shrubs.

Sunlight

Full sun is best for a dense clump and abundant flowering. Excess shade produces floppy growth and fewer plumes, so reserve it for sites with at least six hours of direct light.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained sand or loam. Water regularly through establishment, then irrigate only during extended drought. Avoid chronically wet soil, overfertilization, and frequent shallow watering, which can weaken the plant and reduce its natural drought tolerance.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through spring is ideal, although container-grown grasses can be planted year-round with adequate establishment water.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut old foliage back to 6 to 12 inches in late winter before fresh growth begins. Do not repeatedly shear during the growing season. Remove accumulated debris from the crown and divide only when the center becomes thin or the clump outgrows its space.

Wildlife Value

Seeds can feed small birds, and the fine foliage offers cover and nesting material.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

White Cloud handles Tampa heat, humidity, and ordinary winter cold. Top growth may brown after frost, but established crowns generally regrow in spring. Poor drainage is a greater risk than seasonal temperature changes.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major toxicity or thorn hazard is recognized. Leaf edges may feel coarse, so gloves are helpful during cutback. Roots are dense but nonaggressive; keep the crown clear of pavement edges where reflected heat and trimming equipment can damage it.

Invasive Concerns

This cultivar belongs to a Florida-native species and is not considered invasive.
