ZZ Plant

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

Mature green ZZ plant with glossy upright leaflets in a shaded Tampa patio container

Overview

ZZ plant is an evergreen tropical perennial prized for upright stalks lined with glossy green leaflets. It gives shaded containers and protected beds a clean, architectural look while tolerating missed irrigation.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature clump usually reaches 2 to 4 feet tall and wide. New shoots rise from fleshy underground rhizomes, gradually creating a dense, vase-shaped mass.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a shaded patio accent, beneath a deep overhang, in a sheltered entry bed, or in a movable container with ferns and caladiums.

Sunlight

Provide bright filtered light, partial sun, or shade. Direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaflets, while extremely dark sites slow growth.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in loose, well-drained organic or sandy soil. Water thoroughly, then let the upper soil dry; constantly wet soil can rot the water-storing rhizomes. Established plants are drought tolerant.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Install in spring after cold risk passes. Outdoor year-round planting is safest in protected zone 10B microclimates; use a movable container where winter temperatures fall lower.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove yellow or damaged stalks at soil level with clean pruners. Avoid heavy fertilizer and overwatering, divide crowded clumps only when needed, and watch for scale or mealybugs.

Wildlife Value

The small, often hidden aroid flowers provide little wildlife support. Combine this foliage plant with flowering species when pollinator value is a goal.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Heat and humidity are tolerated in shade, but frost and temperatures below about 60°F can damage growth. Shelter containers during Central Florida cold snaps.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All parts contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should not be eaten. Keep away from children and pets, wear gloves when cutting, and wash after handling sap. Rhizomes are not pavement-lifting roots but can crowd pots.

Invasive Concerns

ZZ plant is nonnative to Florida and is not known for aggressive escape. Put divided rhizomes and trimmings in managed yard waste, never natural areas or drains.
