Overview
African iris is an evergreen clumping perennial from southern Africa. Upright swordlike leaves and white iris-shaped flowers with yellow and violet markings give it clean texture through most of the year.
Mature Size and Growth
Clumps usually reach 2 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Rhizomes slowly enlarge the plant, and flowering stems often produce new plantlets.
Where to Use It
Use in repeating masses along walks, beside water features, in foundation beds, or as a grassy accent beneath palms. It fits formal and contemporary landscapes.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun to partial shade. It accepts many soils when drainage is reasonable. Water during establishment, then irrigate during extended dry periods for the best flowering.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Fall through spring is ideal around Tampa. Remove spent flower stems and damaged leaves at the base. Divide crowded clumps every few years during cool weather or early spring.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
Flowers attract occasional pollinators, while evergreen foliage supplies year-round form. Its strongest value is low-maintenance texture rather than major habitat support.
Important Considerations
African iris is not native to Florida. Leaves develop cold damage during hard freezes, and dense clumps collect old foliage. Avoid constant wetness. Find perennial care information through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions.
