Overview
Agapanthus is a nonnative clumping perennial grown for tall stems topped with blue or white flower globes. Its clean foliage and upright blooms suit formal and tropical Tampa landscapes.
Mature Size
Foliage reaches about 18 to 24 inches. Flower stalks often reach 3 to 4 feet.
Light and Water
Full sun to light afternoon shade works best. Water regularly during establishment and flowering, then allow the soil surface to begin drying.
Soil and Drainage
Use fertile, well-drained soil. Raised beds help where summer rain causes standing water.
Care
Remove spent flower stalks and damaged foliage. Divide crowded clumps when flowering declines.
Landscape Uses
Plant in repeating groups along walks, around patios, in mixed borders, or in large containers.
Best Planting Time
Spring and early fall give roots time to settle before temperature extremes.
Tampa Notes
A hard freeze may burn leaves. Established crowns often recover. Sap and plant parts may irritate skin or cause illness if eaten.
