Overview

Alexander palm is a tall, graceful tropical palm with a smooth gray trunk, green crownshaft, and feather-like fronds. It creates strong vertical scale in warm Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

This solitary palm may exceed 40 feet. The crown commonly spreads 8 to 12 feet. Its slender trunk and self-cleaning growth create a formal appearance.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a tall accent, in spaced rows, or in small groups near large homes and pools. Allow clear overhead space.

Sunlight

Full sun or bright partial sun works well. Young palms appreciate some wind protection.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use rich, well-drained soil with regular moisture. This palm is less drought tolerant than many Florida palms. Avoid prolonged flooding.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Late spring through summer gives roots the longest warm establishment period.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only loose or fully brown fronds. Monitor palm nutrition and irrigation. Avoid trunk injury from string trimmers and staking hardware.

Wildlife Value

Birds may feed on ripe fruit.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

It is sensitive to freezing temperatures, salty wind, and dry exposure. Use protected inland or courtyard locations.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Keep it away from power lines and confined planting pockets. Falling fronds and fruit require clearance from high-use areas.

Invasive Concerns

Alexander palm is native to Australia, not Florida. Monitor volunteer seedlings near natural areas.
