Overview
A massive Florida-native shade tree recognized by mottled white-and-tan bark, broad leaves, and a commanding canopy suited only to very large planting spaces.
Mature Size and Habit
Mature trees regularly reach 70 to 100 feet tall and 50 to 70 feet wide. Growth is fast, with a heavy trunk and wide-reaching limbs.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it for expansive lawns, parks, large commercial sites, and stream or pond edges. It is far too large for typical foundation beds or confined yards.
Sunlight
Full sun is required for balanced growth and a broad healthy crown. Avoid locations shaded by buildings or mature trees.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
It grows best in deep, moist, fertile soil and tolerates periodic flooding. Provide generous irrigation during establishment and extended drought.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring offers the safest planting window in Tampa. Set the root flare at grade and protect a broad soil area from compaction.
Pruning and Maintenance
Frequent structural pruning while young helps build strong branch spacing. Mature trees require professional inspection and pruning because of their enormous scale.
Wildlife Value
The canopy and seed balls support birds and wildlife, and the tree contributes important habitat around waterways. Mature cavities provide shelter.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
American sycamore tolerates Florida heat and winter cold but develops leaf disease in humid weather. Storm exposure makes proper placement and professional care essential.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Roots, limbs, leaves, bark, and seed balls demand generous clearance from buildings, pavement, pools, drains, and utilities. This is a high-litter tree.
Invasive Concerns
American sycamore is Florida native and not invasive. Seedlings can appear on moist open soil but are straightforward to control.
