Overview
Angelonia, also called summer snapdragon, is a heat-tolerant flowering perennial often grown as a long-season bedding plant.
Mature Size and Habit
Most landscape forms grow 12 to 24 inches tall and 8 to 18 inches wide. Cultivars range from compact mounds to taller upright plants.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in sunny borders, foundation beds, containers, mass plantings, and entry displays.
Sunlight
Full sun produces dense growth and the strongest bloom.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently while roots establish. Mature plants tolerate short dry periods. Avoid saturated soil.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Install from spring through early fall after cold risk passes. In protected Tampa locations, plants often persist beyond one season.
Pruning and Maintenance
Trim lightly when stems become open or leggy. Many modern cultivars rebloom without constant deadheading.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract bees and butterflies.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Freezes damage or kill top growth. Heat tolerance is high when roots have moderate moisture.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major thorn, toxicity, or aggressive-root concern is known. Keep it out of low, wet beds.
Invasive Concerns
Angelonia is native to Mexico and the West Indies, not Florida. It is not generally treated as invasive in local landscapes.
