Overview

Australian Tree Fern is a tropical fern with a slender textured trunk and a symmetrical crown of long, finely divided green fronds. It adds height, movement, and a lush woodland character to protected landscapes.

Mature Size and Habit

It can reach 15 to 25 feet tall with a canopy 8 to 15 feet wide. The trunk develops slowly as older fronds are removed, while new fronds unfurl from the central growing crown.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a shaded courtyard focal point, tropical accent, poolside specimen, or centerpiece in a large protected bed. Allow enough overhead and side clearance for the mature frond canopy.

Sunlight

Partial sun or bright shade protects the fronds from scorching. Strong afternoon sun, reflected heat, and drying wind often produce brown edges and a thin canopy.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in organic, well-drained soil and maintain consistent moisture around the root zone and trunk. The soil should remain moist but never stagnant. A generous mulch layer protects surface roots.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant during warm spring or early summer weather so roots establish before winter. Reliable irrigation is important during the first growing season.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only old or fully damaged fronds and avoid cutting into the central crown. Maintain moisture, replenish mulch, and protect the trunk from mechanical damage.

Wildlife Value

The broad frond canopy offers shelter and shaded habitat for small animals. It is grown for form and foliage rather than significant flowers, nectar, or fruit.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Cold temperatures, dry air, and strong wind can damage fronds. Choose a sheltered microclimate with humidity and protection from hard freezes and intense afternoon exposure.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Keep the expanding canopy away from narrow paths and rooflines. The fibrous trunk and old frond bases can be rough, so place the plant where routine contact is limited.

Invasive Concerns

Australian Tree Fern is not native to Florida. Spores can spread in favorable moist environments, so remove unwanted volunteer plants and keep it out of natural areas.
