Overview
Autumn Amethyst Encore Azalea is a compact reblooming evergreen azalea with lavender-purple flowers and purple winter foliage tones. Rhododendron 'Conlee' usually reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
Mature Size and Habit
It forms a dense rounded mound with fine branching. Its compact size fits residential beds better than large Southern indica azaleas, but it still needs room for airflow and a natural outline.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in foundation beds, low flowering hedges, mixed borders, entry gardens, woodland edges, and large containers. Groups create a stronger display and simplify soil preparation.
Sunlight
Provide four to six hours of sun for strong rebloom. Morning sun with filtered afternoon shade suits Tampa. Deep shade reduces flowers, while harsh western sun can stress roots.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Azaleas need acidic, organic, well-drained soil and shallow planting. Set the root ball slightly above grade, water evenly, and avoid alkaline fill, standing water, or mulch over the crown.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through early spring is the best planting period. Cool weather supports roots before summer. Spring works with reliable irrigation and protection from harsh afternoon exposure.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after the main spring bloom and avoid late heavy trimming that removes buds. Monitor lace bugs, mites, caterpillars, root rot, and iron chlorosis from high soil pH.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Repeat bloom extends seasonal nectar, though the timing and abundance vary with weather, pruning, and plant health.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Autumn Amethyst has good cold tolerance for an evergreen azalea. Its shallow roots remain vulnerable to summer heat and drought, so mulch and afternoon shade help.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Azalea leaves and flowers are toxic to people and pets if eaten. Keep them away from animals that chew plants. Shallow, nonaggressive roots are easily damaged by cultivation.
Invasive Concerns
This nonnative cultivated hybrid is not generally considered invasive in Florida. Remove unexpected seedlings and keep clippings out of natural areas.
