Overview
Bald cypress is a long-lived Florida native conifer with soft, feathery foliage that turns coppery brown before dropping in winter. Despite its association with swamps, it adapts well to many ordinary Central Florida landscapes.
Mature Size and Growth
Trees commonly reach 50 to 70 feet tall with a 20 to 30 foot spread. The form is pyramidal when young and broadens with age, creating a strong vertical landmark.
Where to Use It
Use beside ponds, in rain gardens, on large lawns, along drainage areas, or as a stately specimen. Its eventual size requires generous clearance from buildings, utilities, and paved surfaces.
Light, Soil, and Water
Full sun is preferred. Bald cypress accepts wet, periodically flooded, or moderately dry soil once established. Regular water during the first year supports faster rooting, even when the permanent site is not wet.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Fall through early spring is ideal around Tampa. Provide a wide mulch zone and deep irrigation during dry spells. Young trees need little pruning beyond removing competing leaders or damaged branches.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The canopy shelters birds, and the seeds are eaten by wildlife. Its deep green summer foliage and rusty winter color add texture and seasonal change.
Important Considerations
Woody knees are most likely in consistently wet sites and can interfere with mowing or paving. Fallen foliage is seasonal and should be expected. Find native plant information through the Florida Native Plant Society.
