Overview
Basjoo Banana is a fast-growing ornamental banana prized for broad green leaves and a lush tropical presence.
Mature Size and Habit
In a long warm season, clumps commonly reach 12 to 18 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a tropical screen, bold specimen, poolside backdrop, or leafy transition between structures and a garden.
Sunlight
Full sun supports the strongest growth when soil stays moist. Partial sun can reduce heat and wind stress. Deep shade causes weaker stems and a looser habit.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Provide rich, well-drained soil and regular irrigation during active growth. Bananas dislike drought but also decline in stagnant water.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Spring is ideal because warmth gives the rhizome a full season to establish.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove tattered leaves and spent pseudostems with clean, sharp tools. Thin suckers to control width and improve airflow.
Wildlife Value
The large leaves offer temporary shelter for small animals, but the plant has limited food value for Florida wildlife.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat, humidity, and summer rain drive rapid growth. Frost can kill leaves and pseudostems, although established rhizomes may resprout.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
The plant has no major thorn or root hazard, yet wet leaves and cut stems are heavy and slippery.
Invasive Concerns
Basjoo Banana is nonnative and spreads locally by rhizomes. It is not commonly treated as a Florida invasive species, but unwanted suckers should be dug out so the clump remains inside its intended bed.
