Overview

Bayou Bliss Distylium is a low, spreading evergreen shrub with dense, finely textured foliage and a relaxed layered outline. This non-native shrub gives Tampa landscapes year-round structure and bears small, inconspicuous reddish flowers from winter into spring.

Mature Size and Habit

Expect about 3 to 4 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide when established. Branching is naturally dense, so allow the cultivar's full width rather than forcing it into a narrow strip.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it for foundation sweeps, broad borders, low screening, and mass plantings. Its evergreen foliage provides a steady backdrop for palms, grasses, and flowering perennials.

Sunlight

Plant in full sun to partial sun. Strong light supports dense growth and good new-leaf color, while afternoon shade helps beside reflective walls.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Choose well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and keep the root flare at grade. Water deeply during establishment, then taper. Persistent wetness raises Phytophthora root-rot risk.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the easiest planting window in Tampa and Central Florida. Summer planting needs reliable irrigation so the root ball never dries out.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove damaged shoots and shape lightly after the spring flush with selective cuts. Avoid constant hard shearing, and keep mulch away from the stems.

Wildlife Value

Flowers offer modest pollinator interest, but the shrub is valued mainly for cover and structure. Add native bloomers where habitat value is important.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants tolerate Florida heat and short dry periods. Unusual freezes may mark tender new growth, especially on young or wind-exposed plants.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

No major toxicity or thorn hazard is commonly associated with Distylium hybrid 'Bayou Bliss'. Roots are not considered pavement-aggressive, but poorly spaced branches can obstruct walks.

Invasive Concerns

Distylium is not listed as invasive in Florida. It is an Asian-derived ornamental, not a Florida native, so manage it in designed beds and favor natives near natural areas.
