Overview

Bee Balm is a flowering perennial with aromatic foliage and vivid tubular flower clusters that attract pollinators. Its upright stems and long bloom display bring strong color and wildlife activity to garden beds.

Mature Size and Habit

It commonly reaches 2 to 4 feet tall and spreads 2 to 4 feet through short rhizomes. Growth forms a gradually widening colony that looks best when given room and divided as needed.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it in pollinator gardens, sunny borders, rain gardens, cottage-style beds, mixed perennial plantings, or containers. Grouping several plants creates a stronger flower display and nectar source.

Sunlight

Morning sun with some afternoon protection works well in Tampa. Good light supports flowering, while shade reduces bloom density. Protection from extreme late-day heat helps limit stress.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and keep moisture consistent without saturating the crown. Mulch lightly around the root zone while keeping material away from the stems.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Install during fall, winter, or early spring so roots establish before intense summer heat. Spring planting also works with attentive irrigation and afternoon protection.

Pruning and Maintenance

Provide good air movement, remove spent blooms, and thin crowded stems to reduce mildew pressure. Cut declining growth back cleanly and divide crowded clumps to restore vigor.

Wildlife Value

The tubular flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Leaving a few mature seed heads can provide seasonal food and habitat value.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Bee Balm handles normal winter cold, but Tampa's prolonged heat and humidity can shorten flowering and increase mildew pressure. Airflow and proper watering improve performance.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

The aromatic foliage is generally handled without major concern, though sensitive people may experience skin irritation. Its spreading habit needs room and occasional boundary control.

Invasive Concerns

Bee Balm is not considered an invasive landscape plant. Vigorous selections can spread within a bed through rhizomes, so divide or edge the clump when it reaches its intended space.
