Overview

Black Coral Elephant Ear is a tropical foliage perennial with large, glossy, nearly black leaves and contrasting veins.

Mature Size and Habit

In warm, moist conditions, plants typically reach 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a dark accent, in a tropical border, rain-garden edge, large container, or poolside planting with adequate setback.

Sunlight

Partial sun usually balances strong color with reliable moisture. It can take full sun when irrigated consistently, while bright shade protects leaves but may produce a looser plant and greener color.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in rich soil that stays evenly moist but is not stagnant around structures. Regular irrigation is important during heat.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant in spring after cold risk passes for the fastest establishment. Tampa gardeners can also install it in early fall, giving roots time to settle before cool weather slows growth.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut yellow, torn, or cold-damaged leaves at the base with clean tools. Remove wandering shoots when the clump exceeds its space.

Wildlife Value

Flowers are not the main ornamental feature and wildlife value is limited.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

The plant thrives in heat and humidity but is damaged by frost. It may return from protected corms after winter injury.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All parts contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if chewed by people or pets. Sap can irritate skin.

Invasive Concerns

The species Colocasia esculenta has escaped cultivation in parts of Florida.

Helpful Resources

Review current Florida guidance through UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions. Confirm site-specific irrigation, cold protection, and placement needs before installation.
