Overview
Black-eyed Susan is a Florida native wildflower with golden petals surrounding dark brown centers. It creates bold seasonal color in sunny Tampa gardens.
Mature Size
Plants normally reach 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They often reseed where open soil is available.
Light and Water
Full sun provides the strongest flowering. Water during establishment, then allow the soil to dry slightly between irrigation cycles.
Soil and Drainage
Well-drained sand or loam works well. Constantly wet soil causes decline.
Care
Remove some spent blooms to extend flowering and leave others for seed. Cut tired plants back after the main bloom period.
Landscape Uses
Use in pollinator beds, meadow-style plantings, sunny borders, or massed color displays.
Best Planting Time
Fall, winter, and early spring provide the easiest establishment period in Tampa.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support bees and butterflies. Mature seed heads feed finches and other small birds.
Florida Resource
Use the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping Plant Guide to compare regional conditions and placement options.
