Overview
Blanket flower is a colorful Florida native wildflower with red, orange, and yellow daisy-like blooms. It thrives in heat and lean soil, making it useful for sunny Tampa landscapes where many flowering plants struggle.
Mature Size
Plants usually grow 12 to 24 inches tall and spread about 12 to 18 inches. Short-lived plants often reseed when spent flowers remain long enough to mature.
Light and Water
Full sun is essential for compact growth and abundant flowers. Water during establishment. Established plants need little supplemental water and decline when kept too wet.
Soil and Drainage
Use very well-drained sandy soil. Rich soil and frequent irrigation encourage weak growth. Raised beds work well where native soil holds moisture.
Care
Remove some faded blooms to extend flowering and leave others for seed. Trim tired growth when needed. Avoid heavy fertilizer.
Landscape Uses
Plant in pollinator gardens, coastal beds, sunny borders, mailbox gardens, and naturalized drifts. Group plants for the strongest visual impact.
Best Planting Time
Install during fall, late winter, or spring. Avoid placing new plants into saturated summer soil.
Wildlife Value
Flowers support native bees and butterflies. Mature seed heads feed small birds and help the planting renew itself.
