Overview
Blue daze is a low tropical groundcover with silvery-green foliage and true blue flowers with pale centers. Flowers open during bright daylight and often close during cloudy weather or late in the day.
Mature Size and Growth
Plants usually reach 8 to 18 inches tall and spread 2 to 3 feet. Stems form a soft mound and trail over bed edges or containers.
Where to Use It
Use it along sunny borders, in rock gardens, around palms, in containers, or as a flowering groundcover. Strong drainage makes it useful in raised beds and hot sites where delicate annuals struggle.
Light, Soil, and Water
Plant in full sun for the best flowering. It needs well-drained soil and moderate water during establishment. Established plants tolerate short dry periods. Wet soil and heavy shade cause thinning and root decline.
Best Time to Plant and Care
Plant after freeze risk passes in spring or in early fall with time to establish before winter. Light trimming restores shape. Replace or cut back severely damaged plants after cold weather.
Wildlife and Landscape Value
The long flowering season supplies color and occasional pollinator activity. Its blue flowers contrast well with yellow, orange, silver, and deep green foliage.
Important Considerations
Blue daze is not native to Florida and is tender during freezes. It might behave as a perennial in protected Tampa sites but often requires spring renewal after a hard winter. Learn more from UF/IFAS Extension.
