Overview

Blue Flame Agave is a sculptural hybrid succulent known for broad blue-green leaves that curve inward like a flame. Its softer outline brings strong form to modern Tampa landscapes without the rigid look of larger century plants.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature rosette commonly reaches about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a specimen in gravel beds, a repeated accent along a sunny wall, or a container focal point. Keep surrounding plants low so the agave's form remains visible.

Sunlight

Full sun develops the best color and compact shape.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Excellent drainage is essential. Plant slightly high in sandy or amended soil and keep irrigation away from the crown. Water during establishment, then allow the root zone to dry between deep applications.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring is the safest planting window in Tampa.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only dead lower leaves and unwanted offsets with clean tools. Avoid cutting healthy leaves for size control. Inspect for agave snout weevil, scale, and rot at the crown.

Wildlife Value

The foliage provides limited direct wildlife value.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Blue Flame handles heat and short dry periods well. Prolonged wet weather is a greater threat than heat. A hard freeze can mark leaves, though established plants often recover from limited cold injury.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Agave sap can irritate skin and eyes.

Invasive Concerns

This hybrid is not native to Florida and is not generally treated as invasive. Remove excess offsets before colonies spread beyond the intended bed and never discard live pups in natural areas.
