Overview

Blue Wave Agave is a bold architectural succulent with broad blue-green leaves arranged in a flowing rosette. It gives contemporary South Tampa landscapes strong structure, clean color, and excellent drought performance.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature rosette generally reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and wide and can produce offsets around the base. Plan for the full spread so leaves remain clear of foot traffic.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a specimen in rock beds, at driveway entries, beside pools, or in large containers. Repeating a small number of rosettes creates a strong modern planting rhythm.

Sunlight

Full sun gives the best compact form and blue color. Light afternoon shade reduces heat stress near pale walls, pavers, and other reflective surfaces.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use sharply drained soil and keep the crown above grade. Water during establishment, then irrigate sparingly because persistent moisture causes crown and root rot.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only damaged lower leaves with clean tools and control offsets where a single rosette is desired. Watch for agave snout weevil and early signs of soft rot.

Wildlife Value

A mature flowering stalk attracts pollinators, although each rosette flowers once before declining. Offsets often continue the planting after flowering.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Blue Wave Agave handles Tampa heat, humidity, and short dry periods. Freeze injury and saturated summer soil present greater risks than ordinary heat.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Leaf tips and sap can injure skin and eyes. Keep plants away from narrow walks, play areas, pet paths, vehicle doors, and service access.

Invasive Concerns

This agave is nonnative and spreads mainly by offsets in managed landscapes. Remove unwanted pups before they form dense colonies.
