Overview
Brazilian red cloak is a lush tropical shrub with very large glossy leaves and striking upright spikes of crimson bracts surrounding small white flowers.
Mature Size and Habit
It grows quickly into an upright shrub about 8 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide where winter cold is limited.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a flowering screen, tropical foundation plant, courtyard specimen, or dramatic backdrop.
Sunlight
Full sun encourages heavier flowering, while partial sun protects leaves from severe afternoon exposure.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Provide rich, well-drained soil and even moisture. Mulch the root zone and avoid prolonged drought or waterlogged beds.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Plant from spring through early fall so the root system is established before winter.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune after flowering or in late winter to control size and encourage dense new growth. Remove freeze-damaged stems after cold risk passes.
Wildlife Value
Flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Frost and freezes can burn foliage or kill stems to the ground. It performs best in sheltered Tampa locations.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
No major toxicity, thorn, or aggressive-root concern is commonly reported. Give the broad leaves protection from strong wind.
Invasive Concerns
It is not native to Florida and is not generally listed as invasive in maintained landscapes.
