Overview

Brodie Eastern Red Cedar is a narrow Florida-native evergreen selected for dense blue-green foliage and a strong upright form. It provides year-round screening where a broad tree would consume too much space.

Mature Size and Habit

Mature trees commonly reach 20 to 25 feet tall while remaining about 6 to 8 feet wide. The columnar structure stays naturally dense when plants receive full sun from the base upward.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a vertical accent, a narrow privacy row, a windbreak, or a screen along larger side yards. Allow room for mature width and keep the leader clear of overhead conflicts.

Sunlight

Full sun is best. Shaded lower branches thin over time, which weakens screening and exposes the trunk.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in well-drained soil with the root flare visible. Water deeply through establishment, then reduce frequency as the root system expands.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Fall through early spring provides mild establishment weather in Tampa. Warm-season planting also works when irrigation is dependable and the root zone is checked frequently.

Pruning and Maintenance

Maintain one strong central leader, remove broken branches, and avoid shearing into old bare wood. Watch for bagworms, mites, cedar-apple rust, and drainage problems.

Wildlife Value

The foliage and berry-like cones provide cover and food for birds, while the plant supports native insects. It contributes more habitat value than most nonnative screen trees.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Brodie handles Tampa heat, wind, salt exposure, and ordinary winter cold. Persistent saturated soil and severe root disturbance create the greatest risks.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Roots are not normally aggressive, but mature trees need distance from foundations, pavement, utilities, and overhead lines. Do not crowd them into narrow foundation beds.

Invasive Concerns

This cultivar belongs to a Florida-native species and is appropriate within its site conditions. Natural seedlings can occur where birds distribute seed.

Helpful Resources

For site-specific guidance, review current UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommendations and confirm local placement, irrigation, and maintenance requirements before installation.
