Overview

Neoregelia bromeliads are evergreen rosette-forming tropicals prized for vivid foliage patterns and a colorful central cup around bloom time.

Mature Size and Habit

Most landscape forms stay under 2 feet tall and wide, then produce offsets that slowly form a colony.

Best Landscape Uses

Use them beneath palms, along shaded borders, in containers, poolside beds, or as colorful ground-level accents.

Sunlight

Bright filtered light or partial shade gives the best color without scorching. Deep shade reduces color, while harsh afternoon sun can burn leaves.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Use a very well-drained, airy planting medium. Keep the central cup supplied with clean water and flush it periodically while avoiding constantly saturated roots.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant during warm months. Protect newly installed plants from sudden intense sun and cold dry wind.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove spent mother rosettes after their offsets mature. Clear debris from cups and watch for scale insects.

Wildlife Value

The leaf rosettes hold water and provide small-scale habitat for insects and other garden wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Cold below the mid-30s can damage foliage. Many cultivars need shelter from frost and intense summer afternoon sun.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Many Neoregelia cultivars have small spines along leaf margins, so keep them away from narrow walkways and use gloves when handling.

Invasive Concerns

These bromeliads are not native to Florida and are not generally considered invasive in managed beds.
