Overview
Broomsedge bluestem is a Florida native bunchgrass valued for upright texture, coppery fall color, silvery seed heads, and tolerance of poor dry soil.
Mature Size and Habit
Clumps commonly reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. It stays upright and does not spread by aggressive runners.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in native borders, erosion-control plantings, dry rain-garden edges, meadow designs, and massed accents.
Sunlight
Full sun is required for dense upright growth and strong fall color.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
It thrives in sandy, infertile, well-drained soil. Water during establishment, then use little supplemental irrigation. Rich soil creates weak growth.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Fall through spring is ideal. Summer planting works when new clumps receive consistent establishment water.
Pruning and Maintenance
Cut old stems back to 6 to 10 inches before spring growth. Remove unwanted seedlings and accumulated dry material.
Wildlife Value
Dense clumps provide shelter. Birds use seeds and nesting material. The grass supports skipper butterflies.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
It tolerates heat and drought. Shade weakens the clump. Dry winter foliage persists until cut back.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Dry winter foliage burns readily. Keep mature clumps away from buildings, grills, ignition sources, and narrow walks.
Invasive Concerns
It is native to Florida. Seedlings may appear in open soil, so remove them where a formal design requires control.
