Overview
Bush Allamanda is a tropical evergreen shrub selected for glossy green foliage and large golden trumpet flowers.
Mature Size and Habit
With pruning, it is usually maintained 4 to 7 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it in a tropical border, sunny foundation bed, flowering screen, or as a loose specimen.
Sunlight
Full sun produces the heaviest flowering. Bright partial sun is acceptable, particularly with afternoon light, but deep shade creates sparse growth and far fewer blooms.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Grow in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture during establishment and flowering. Avoid waterlogged locations.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Install from spring through early fall after the risk of a late cold snap has passed.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly after a flowering flush to guide shape and remove crossing stems. Hard cutting can delay bloom.
Wildlife Value
The showy flowers can attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant is not a major native wildlife host, so combine it with Florida native species for stronger habitat value.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Heat and humidity encourage growth, but foliage and stems are tender to frost. Cold-damaged branches can be removed after new spring growth reveals live wood.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
All parts contain irritating milky sap and should not be eaten. Keep away from pets and young children, and avoid skin or eye contact when pruning.
Invasive Concerns
Bush Allamanda is nonnative. It is not commonly managed as a prohibited Tampa landscape plant, yet gardeners should remove seedlings or stray rooted stems and keep growth within cultivated beds.
