Overview

Buttonbush is a Florida native shrub known for round white pincushion flowers followed by small seed balls. It thrives near water and brings strong pollinator value to Tampa landscapes.

Mature Size

Expect 6 to 12 feet tall and wide. Selective pruning keeps the plant smaller, but enough room should remain for its naturally rounded form.

Light and Water

Full sun produces the heaviest flowering. Partial shade also works. This plant prefers regular moisture and tolerates periodically flooded soil.

Soil and Drainage

Use it in moist sand, loam, rain gardens, swales, or pond edges. Avoid extremely dry beds unless dependable irrigation is available.

Care

Prune in late winter to remove weak wood and control size. Avoid tight shearing because it reduces flowers and hides the natural branching.

Landscape Uses

Use as a rain-garden anchor, pond-edge shrub, native screen, or wildlife-garden feature.

Best Planting Time

Fall through early spring gives roots time to establish before summer heat. Summer planting works in consistently moist soil.

Wildlife Value

The fragrant flower heads attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Seeds support birds and wetland wildlife.
