Overview

Caladium is a warm-season foliage plant grown for heart-shaped leaves marked in white, pink, red, green, or mixed patterns. It brings immediate color to shaded South Tampa beds where flowering plants often struggle.

Mature Size and Habit

Most cultivars grow 1 to 2.5 feet tall and spread through clusters of leaves rising from underground tubers. The top growth naturally disappears during cool-season dormancy.

Best Landscape Uses

Use caladiums in borders, mass plantings, containers, shaded courtyards, entry beds, and protected pool areas. Groups of one cultivar create the cleanest visual effect.

Sunlight

Partial shade and bright filtered light suit most selections. Sun-tolerant cultivars accept more direct light when irrigation remains consistent, but harsh afternoon sun can scorch foliage.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in loose, organically enriched, well-drained soil. Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth without allowing tubers to sit in saturated conditions.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant after the soil warms in spring. Established displays remain colorful through summer and fall, then decline as shorter days and cooler weather trigger dormancy.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove torn or yellow leaves at the base and maintain mulch around, not over, the crown. Mark planting locations before dormancy so tubers are not damaged during winter bed work.

Wildlife Value

Caladiums offer limited nectar, fruit, or seed value for wildlife. Their main landscape contribution is colorful foliage and low seasonal cover.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Warm humid weather supports rapid growth. Cold soil stops growth, and frost destroys leaves, although healthy tubers can return when conditions warm.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

All plant parts contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if chewed by people or pets. Sap can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves during handling.

Invasive Concerns

Caladiums are managed ornamentals and are not considered major Florida invasive plants. Keep discarded tubers and soil out of natural areas.
