Overview
Calamondin Orange is a compact evergreen citrus tree with fragrant white flowers and abundant small orange fruit. The tart fruit is useful for drinks, marmalade, marinades, and decorative edible landscapes.
Mature Size and Habit
Trees commonly mature 6 to 10 feet tall and wide in the ground, while container plants stay smaller.
Best Landscape Uses
Use it as a sunny edible accent, a courtyard tree, or a large patio container. Place it where fallen fruit is easy to collect and where service access remains clear.
Sunlight
Provide at least six hours of direct sun for dense growth, flowers, and fruit.
Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation
Plant in well-drained soil and keep the root flare above grade. Water deeply during establishment, then as the upper soil dries. Citrus declines in standing water and when mulch touches the trunk.
Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida
Late winter through spring is ideal after severe freeze risk declines.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune lightly to remove dead, crossing, or rootstock growth. Fertilize according to UF/IFAS citrus guidance and monitor for citrus leafminer, scale, mites, psyllids, nutrient problems, and fruit disease.
Wildlife Value
Fragrant flowers support bees and other pollinators.
Cold and Heat Sensitivity
Calamondin is more cold tolerant than many limes but still suffers during hard freezes. Tampa heat is suitable when roots receive steady moisture. Wind and drought increase fruit drop.
Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings
Branches can carry small thorns, and citrus oils or fruit can upset pets if eaten in quantity.
Invasive Concerns
Calamondin is not native to Florida and is not generally listed as invasive. Remove rootstock suckers and volunteer seedlings, and dispose of diseased citrus material according to local guidance.
