Overview
Cape plumbago is a widely used nonnative flowering shrub prized for powder-blue flower clusters and a relaxed spreading habit. It blooms through much of the warm season in Tampa and recovers quickly from routine trimming.
Mature Size
Expect 4 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide when unpruned. Compact size requires periodic selective pruning.
Light and Water
Full sun produces the most flowers. Partial shade is acceptable but reduces bloom density. Water consistently during establishment, then irrigate during extended drought.
Soil and Drainage
Plumbago adapts to many soils but needs drainage. It tolerates sandy soil and moderate salt exposure. Avoid low areas where water remains after storms.
Care
Cut back lightly between flowering cycles to renew growth. Avoid frequent square shearing because flowers form near the outer growth. Cold-damaged stems should be pruned after frost risk passes.
Landscape Uses
Use as a loose hedge, flowering foundation shrub, bank cover, or cascading plant above a wall. Give it enough width so stems do not block walks.
Best Planting Time
Spring and early fall are ideal. Summer planting works with close irrigation monitoring.
Tampa Notes
A hard freeze can burn foliage and stems. Protected plants normally regrow when roots remain healthy.
