Overview

Carolina Allspice is a Florida-native deciduous shrub with broad aromatic leaves and unusual burgundy flowers. The fragrance varies by plant, often resembling fruit, spice, or wine, so select flowering specimens when scent matters.

Mature Size and Habit

Plants commonly mature 6 to 9 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded multi-stem colony.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a shaded specimen, a loose privacy planting, a woodland-edge shrub, or a background for native perennials. Its informal shape suits naturalistic beds better than tightly clipped foundations.

Sunlight

Partial sun or bright shade is best in Central Florida.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil that holds moderate moisture. Irrigate during establishment and extended drought. Avoid permanently flooded areas, highly alkaline fill, and shallow dry pockets beside pavement.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Install from October through early spring for strong root development before summer.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune after flowering by removing older stems at the base. Control unwanted suckers at the edge of the clump. The shrub has few serious pests, though scale, leaf spots, or mildew can appear.

Wildlife Value

Flowers are pollinated mainly by small beetles and other insects.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Carolina Allspice tolerates Central Florida cold and heat when planted in filtered light with adequate moisture. Hot reflected sites cause leaf scorch, and drought can trigger early leaf drop.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Seeds and other plant parts should not be eaten, and ingestion can be toxic.

Invasive Concerns

This species is native to Florida and is not considered invasive in its native range. Its suckering habit still requires boundary management in small residential beds.
