Overview

Chestnut dioon is an ancient-looking cycad prized for a compact crown of stiff, blue-green fronds.

Mature Size and Habit

A mature plant generally forms a rounded crown about 4 to 8 feet tall and wide over many years. New fronds emerge from a short trunk and arch outward in an orderly rosette, creating a bold architectural silhouette.

Best Landscape Uses

Use it as a specimen near an entry, in a rock garden, in a large container, or among drought-tolerant tropical foliage.

Sunlight

Full sun produces dense growth and strong color, though partial sun is useful on very hot reflected sites.

Soil, Drainage, and Irrigation

Plant in sharply drained sandy or amended soil. Water regularly during establishment, then irrigate deeply only after the root zone begins to dry. Constantly wet soil raises the risk of root and crown decline.

Best Planting Season for Tampa and Central Florida

Plant from late winter through spring, or in early fall while soil remains warm. This timing gives roots time to settle before Tampa's heaviest summer rain or an unusual Central Florida cold event.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove only fully brown fronds with clean tools and retain green foliage for energy storage. Clear fallen debris from the crown, avoid trunk wounds, and watch for scale insects during routine landscape inspections.

Wildlife Value

The plant offers structure and occasional shelter but limited nectar or fruit value for local wildlife.

Cold and Heat Sensitivity

Established plants tolerate Florida heat and seasonal dryness. Chestnut dioon is among the more cold-tolerant cycads, yet tender new growth benefits from frost protection and a location away from harsh winter wind.

Safety, Roots, and Placement Warnings

Leaf tips are sharp, and all cycad parts, especially seeds, are toxic if eaten. Keep the crown away from walks, play areas, and pet access. Its roots are not considered aggressive near sound hardscape.

Invasive Concerns

Chestnut dioon is not listed as invasive in Florida. Its very slow growth and limited natural spread make containment straightforward, though any ripe seeds should be removed where children or animals are present.
